What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit
A step-by-step look at a first chiropractic appointment: paperwork, consultation, exam, possible X-rays, your care plan and how you may feel after.

Trying a chiropractor for the first time can feel like a step into the unknown. Knowing what happens at that first appointment makes it easier to relax and get the most out of it. Here is what a first visit typically looks like.
Before you arrive
- Fill in your intake forms. Completing them ahead of time saves time at the clinic. You can find them on our new patient forms page.
- Bring what's relevant: a photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, a list of your medications, and any recent imaging reports or X-rays.
- Wear comfortable clothes that let you move and bend easily.
Step 1: The consultation
Your visit starts with a conversation. Your chiropractor will ask where it hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects your work, sleep and activities. You'll also talk about past injuries, surgeries and overall health. This is the time to share your goals, whether that's sleeping through the night, getting back to running or simply sitting at your desk without pain.
Step 2: The examination
Next comes a hands-on exam, which may include:
- Checking your posture and how you stand and walk
- Measuring how well your neck, back and joints move
- Orthopedic tests to pinpoint which structures are involved
- Neurological checks of reflexes, strength and sensation
- Feeling along the spine for tenderness, tight muscles and restricted joints
Step 3: X-rays, if needed
Not everyone needs X-rays. If your history or exam suggests they would help, for example after an accident or when symptoms point to a structural problem, imaging gives a clearer picture of your spine and helps rule out anything that needs a different kind of care.
Step 4: Your findings and care plan
Your chiropractor will explain what they found in plain language: what is causing your pain, what treatment involves, how many visits to expect and what you can do at home. You should leave understanding your options. Ask as many questions as you like.
Step 5: Your first treatment
When it's appropriate, treatment may begin on the first day. This can include a gentle adjustment of restricted joints, soft tissue work, or other therapies suited to your condition. You may hear a pop during an adjustment, or you may not; both are normal. If you are nervous, say so. Techniques can be adapted to your comfort.
How you may feel afterward
Many people feel looser right away. Some feel mild soreness for a day or two, similar to after a new workout, as muscles and joints adjust. Staying active with gentle walking and drinking water can help. Let your chiropractor know if anything feels unusual.
